Eat me!

May 4th, 2009 § 4

Cupcakes! Please give me cupcakes!

They’re not very common in Belgium but in the USA (especially New York) you can buy cupcakes on every corner of the street. As you can see, they’re like tiny versions of cake with lots of frosting on top and can be found in all sorts of colors, shapes and flavors!

Even geeks make cupcakes (iPhone cupcakes & Mario cupcakes) so I’m sure it’s not that hard ;)

I don’t even want to think about how fat I would get if I lived in the USA and had the chance to eat these every day.

Garage sale

May 2nd, 2009 § 1

Something you don’t see much in Belgium are garage sales, but in the USA they are a real phenomenon. Every weekend you see signs on the streets letting you know of a garage sale nearby.

If you follow the signs, you’ll end up in the front yard of some stranger wearing a fanny pack, looking at all the things they want to sell. You can often find real gems at these garage sales but you’ll need some good haggling skills if you want to get a bargain.

In my opinion, no trip to the USA is complete without going to a garage sale!

Sunday Streets

April 30th, 2009 § 0

I started following Gavin Newsom, the mayor of San Francisco, on Twitter and he recently tweeted about Sunday Streets. This is a concept that started last year, where certain streets are blocked for cars so people can use them to

  • walk
  • ride their bikes
  • do sports
  • dance and sing
  • skate
  • children can play on the streets

It sounds like a lot of fun and luckily for us there is one planned on July 19th so that’s where we’ll be all day!

Have a look at this video to get a better look at what’s going on:

Apple HQ

April 28th, 2009 § 0

Next in my series of ‘things to do when in San Francisco’ is in the famous Silicon Valley! Yes, you guessed it … Apple HQ is located only 15 minutes away from where Laurens is staying so that is definitely on my list of things to see!

Unfortunately they don’t give tours to the public, but there is an Apple Shop where you can buy things like stickers, t-shirts and other Mac-related-fan-items.

If we hang out there long enough we might even get a glimpse of the almighty Steve Jobs (he should return to Apple in June). But I don’t think Charlotte will like that very much ;))

Go to university

April 26th, 2009 § 0

Now something I would really like to do: walk across the campus of a big American University and breathe in the atmosphere. Maybe even walk in and follow a course, see the difference between Belgium and the USA. Oh and talk to some cute students ;)

There are two well-known universities close to San Francisco: Berkeley and Stanford. I think Charlotte and I will visit Stanford University, since it’s very close (somewhere between San Francisco and where Laurens is staying).

Nostalgia

April 24th, 2009 § 0

Yesterday, I was going over some old pictures and came across my album from our schooltrip to Italy 5 years ago. In it, were some very disturbing pictures of Max, my ‘travel monkey’.

Yes, I have a stuffed animal that I sometimes take with me when I travel. Don’t ask me how that started, but it somehow became a tradition …

Anyway, apparently I was walking all over Italy with Max and some people felt that they needed to do something about that. So one evening, they took him without my knowing and tortured him! The following day, I found these pictures on my camera ;)

You can image that I was very shocked when I saw these images, thinking about the pain that Max had gone through!

So in the evening, me and Stefanie decided to give him a bath. Of course, he needed to be dried afterward, which resulted in the following hilarious movie:

If you’re going to San Francisco

April 23rd, 2009 § 0

As I’m writing this post, Laurens should be in the air somewhere between Frankfurt and San Francisco! And this time, he’s not the one flying …

A while ago, I promised him to make a list of all the things he should do/I would do in the US of A. So of course, I decided to make a blog post out of it :D Every day I will post one place/item/thing to visit. (and by ‘every day’ I mean, whenever I feel like, so probably not every day …)

BTW, I’m going to be visiting Laurens together with Charlotte from July 2 untill July 22! But more details on that later …

Let’s start in San Francisco shall we?

The first place on my list is Lombard street, also know as ‘the crookedest street in the world’ because it is in fact the most crooked street in the world. It consists of 8 hairpin turns on a very short end. If you don’t have a car, you can always call a cab and ask them to drive you down the street ;)

California 2007

February 20th, 2009 § 2

So I got bored and decided to finally make a movie from all the video I made on my trip to California. It’s still a work in progress, but I felt the need to put it on my blog already ;)

Most of the video is about Little Laura and her struggles to speak Dutch, which can be very funny sometimes :D

Anyone have an idea for a good soundtrack?

I LOVE the 90s

February 17th, 2009 § 0

On April 12th I will be in Hasselt for the ‘I Love the 90s Party’. And since some people are still doubting whether they should join me, here are 4 reasons why you should definitely buy a ticket!

And last, but not least
